MFU Disappointed with Farm Bill Delay

GREAT FALLS, MT (Nov. 16, 2007) – The Montana Farmers Union released the following statement regarding the U.S. Senate’s cloture vote on the 2007 Farm Bill this morning.

“We are disappointed that the necessary votes to invoke cloture were not available in the countryside, and consequently the Farm Bill debate has been delayed.

“The current farm bill expired September 30 and farmers need some certainty as they begin making plans for next planting season.

“We commend Senators Baucus and Tester for their positive votes, and appreciate their understanding of the need to pass a Farm Bill now.

“The bill as it exists contains elements that are very important, including investments in conservation, renewable energy, nutrition, and permanent disaster.  In addition, country-of-origin labeling for all consumers will be lost if this Farm Bill is not passed.

“We encourage the Senate leadership to continue to talk during the two-week Thanksgiving recess, and return to Washington, D.C. in December ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work.  There still is time to pass a Farm Bill that will work for all the country’s farmers, ranchers, rural communities, and consumers across the nation.”
