Enrollment deadline extended for Carbon Credit Program

GREAT FALLS, MT (August 13, 2007) – The enrollment deadline for the Farmers Union’s Carbon Credit Program has been extended to September 15.  The previous deadline was August 15.

“We are happy that the Chicago Climate Exchange has approved extending the deadline to September 15,” said MFU President Alan Merrill.  “This is a busy time for farmers and ranchers, so the added time will allow more people to take advantage of the program if they so choose.”

The Carbon Credit Program pays producers to store carbon dioxide in their soil through practices such as no-till cropping, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.  Other carbon-storing practices include long-term grass stands, native rangeland acres, forested acres, and animal waste systems that capture methane.

Farmers Union was approved as an aggregator last year by the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) to pool and market blocks of carbon credits through the exchange.  The CCX is the world’s first greenhouse gas emission registry, reduction and trading system.
