MFU Statement on 2007 Farm Bill
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 31, 2007
GREAT FALLS, MT (Jan. 31, 2007) – Montana Farmers Union President Alan Merrill today made the following statement regarding U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Johanns’ release of his 2007 Farm Bill proposal.
“We are pleased to have a Farm Bill proposal presented early in the year in order to allow sufficient time for comprehensive debate on its many important issues.
“Our initial impression is we are encouraged by many of the food and nutrition proposals as well as some of the rural development aspects. In particular, many Montana rural hospitals may benefit from the continued funding effort. In addition, the mention of additional risk management tools for producers could be a tremendous asset.
“We are disappointed, however, that wheat, barley, and biofuels were not mentioned at all. In fact, the conservation and energy titles appear to be funded significantly less than one would expect given President Bush’s recent comments in his State of the Union speech.
“Finally, we have true concern about the sugar proposal, the trade ramifications, and feel work will be needed to make sure these producers’ needs are recognized and rectified.
“As with everything, the proof is in the details. For example, most people would not argue with eliminating the three-entity rule if it eliminated unfair, large profits by mega corporations. However, what about parents with adult children who want to get into farming? The rule elimination could abolish the boost needed for beginning farmers.
“These are just a few of the issues included in the massive Farm Bill. We look forward to participating in the debate and working on public policy that will address these issues to benefit farmers, ranchers, rural communities and consumers across Montana.”
