MFU Opposes Proposed Commercial Driver’s License Requirement for Agriculture

GREAT FALLS, MT (July 28, 2011) – Montana Farmers Union President Alan Merrill issued the following statement on the proposed regulation change by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA):

“It is possible that the proposed change to consider all wheat shipments to be considered interstate could require commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) of all grain haulers – regardless of how long the haul and within the state of Montana. In addition, the proposed change would also be applied to ranchers hauling livestock trailers as small as 16 feet.

“These proposed rule changes are not in the best interest of Montana agriculture.”
