Youth Achievement Awards
for Montana Farmers Union

The Montana Farmers Union is a statewide grassroots organization working for family farmers, ranchers and rural communities through conferences, scholarships and other educational opportunities as well as legislative representation and support for producer-owned cooperatives.

Montana Farmers Union would like to recognize the valuable contribution that our youth have made to Montana. The following is a list of awards and eligibility requirements.

Award Cycle

The yearly cycle will begin on September 1st.  All qualifications must be met prior to August 31st the following year.

Membership dues must be current

Qualifying MFU functions

  1. MFU camp
  2. Local or county meetings
  3. State convention
  4. Day camp

Community Service Options (verification required)

1. Assist at MFU trade show/fair booth

2. Selling an MFU membership

3. Picking up trash around your neighborhood

4. Recruit a camper

5. Help with a community garden

6. Volunteer babysitting

7. Spending the day with an elderly person

8. Volunteer for a non-profit organization

9. Going to work with Mom or Dad

10. Be a Page at the State Legislature

11. Job shadow someone in your community

12. Contact Education Director for other opportunities

Special Project Options

  1. Correspondence project
  2. Presentation in classroom
  3.  Write to a legislator

Senior Youth Advisory Council (SYAC)

Members will help plan, organize, brainstorm and assist in the implementation of the upcoming summer camping program which includes theme nights, camp projects, crafts, camp souvenirs and other activities.  SYAC members are required to attend all MFU summer camps.  They will host the Senior Leadership Camp.  Other responsibilities include:

  1. Assist with the MFU Annual State Convention by giving presentation as requested and helping with convention day camp.
  2. Assist with other projects as they pertain to youth education/activities that may arise during the year.

Make Up Opportunities

Youth Leaders may have the opportunity to make up qualification requirements by completing a correspondence project.  Only one make up project will be permitted at both the Junior and Senior levels.  Contact the MFU Education Director for more information.

Travel expenses and registration fees paid to attend National All-States Camp in Bailey, CO

SYAC

16-20

Members are elected via democratic process at MFU Senior Camp.

Registration, travel expenses and meals will be provided to attend the annual SYAC Leadership Retreat

18-21

  1. Earn a minimum of three years of Senior MFU Achievement Awards
  2. Be able to attend MFU State Convention
  3. Submit completed application and personal recommendations by specified date

Free one year membership to MFU and expenses paid to attend the National Farmers Union Convention the following year

Mildred Stoltz

8-13

Youth leaders decide together upon two youth who will receive this award.  Winners are chosen for their membership in MFU, a positive attitude, people skills, kindness, sensitivity, good verbal skills, and a good understanding of cooperative principles

Free camp registration for awardee and friend, plaque, and $50

*Summer staff will be present to supervise and interact with the youth and parents throughout the day.
